We all know the feeling – the new years resolution, that end-of-year lull where our motivation and energy levels dip lower than usual. It can be tough to stay on track with our goals and New Year’s resolutions during this time, but it’s important to remember that we’re not alone in this. In fact, research shows that most people struggle with maintaining their resolutions after just a few weeks. So if you’re feeling like giving up on your goals for 2023, don’t despair – you’re definitely not alone! Here are some tips to help you stay on track and make your New Year’s resolutions last.

New Years Resolution #1: Set realistic goals for yourself – don’t try to accomplish too much at once

Setting realistic goals for yourself is key when it comes to achieving success. Over-ambition can be both overwhelming and discouraging. Instead of attempting to do too much at once, focus on one achievable goal and build off of that.

For example, if you’re working towards a goal of becoming healthier, don’t try to make all the changes in your lifestyle at once; rather start with something achievable such as drinking more water each day or going for a thirty-minute walk every morning. After building this habit, as you become more comfortable with it, then you can gradually introduce additional changes into your routine. Don’t just focus on the result – focus on the process to get there – and remember to remember small successes along the way for motivation!

New Years Resolution #2: Make a plan of action for each goal, including what steps you need to take and when you will take them.

Formulating a plan of action for each goal is essential to success. Before taking any steps, one should break down the goal into small and achievable checkpoints and set realistic timelines to ensure progress. Once these checkpoints have been determined, create an achievable timeline for when you need to complete them by.

This helps to keep focus and encourages confidence as it allows you to measure your performance along the way. After creating a schedule and plan that works best for your specific needs, stick with it! Consistent effort over time will help you realize your goals in the long run.

New Years Resolution #3: Please write down your goals and refer to them often throughout the year

As the new year unfolds, creating our own set of goals is common. Whether they’re related to fitness, career, relationships or something else entirely, setting goals is a great way to measure our accomplishments over the course of any year.

Furthermore, writing them down and referring back to them regularly can ensure that we remain motivated and stay on track. Every once in a while it’s important to step back and check-in with ourselves so that we can clearly define what it is we are working toward and remain flexible as needed. With this in mind, write down your goals at the beginning of any year so you’ll have a recurring reminder and source of motivation throughout!

New Years Resolution #4: Hold yourself accountable by telling friends and family about your resolutions

Making resolutions can be difficult, and even more so can be to hold ourselves accountable for them. One way of tackling this difficulty is to make sure there’s support. That’s why telling friends and family about your resolutions is an important step that you should take. Doing so doesn’t only bring in the added accountability factor, but also gives you a space to discuss and review your progress, brainstorm solutions for any impediments, or to get motivated when needed.

Knowing others are keenly observing can remind you of the goal and motivate you further on the path towards completing it. It just might be the trick that helps you stay focused on achieving your ultimate resolution!

New Years Resolution #5: Celebrate your accomplishments along the way, no matter how small they may be

One of the most important things in life is to recognize and appreciate small milestones along the way. Instead of focusing on reaching one huge, grand goal, it can be beneficial to take a step back, reflect on experiences up until that point, and celebrate all of your accomplishments. Even if something may seem small and insignificant at first, recognizing these successes no matter how little they may be will help motivate you, give you a sense of pride and joy, put your progress into perspective to gain motivation for the next steps ahead.

Examples can range from completing an assignment earlier than predicted or taking time out of your day just to relax- sometimes things that don’t necessarily make it onto our “checklist” are worth celebrating too!

My final thoughts

If you want to make 2019 your best year yet, start by setting realistic goals for yourself and making a plan of action. Write down your goals and refer to them often throughout the year, and be sure to celebrate your accomplishments along the way – no matter how small they may be! And finally, don’t forget to hold yourself accountable by telling friends and family about your resolutions. Good luck!
